Remodeled basements: How to Finish Your Home

Remodeled basements are a great place for family living spaces because they are subgrade (at least partially under the ground) so the earth acts as a natural soundproofing device. Remodeled basements are especially useful in urban sprawl areas, where land is often a tight commodity. With neighbors relatively close together, there is often not room for a home addition, even if you did want one. Instead, finishing a basement goes below your house to use that space instead of moving outward from your home.

If you pile on too much, it’s going to become a burden. Any good woodsman knows it, and it applies to remodeled basements as well. Right now, you’re probably using your basement for storage. And you’re probably using that space poorly. However, “stuff” is “stuff”, and your stored items and utilities are going to take up space no matter how well organized it is.

Many people leave a small portion of their basement unfinished for maintenance items like the furnace, hot water heater and electric panel. After all, you probably won’t want those things in your remodeled space. So instead they go in an unfinished room in the basement along with your dehumidifier. The dehumidifier gets ducted into the wall so the machine stays behind closed doors, but the remodeled basements gets the benefit of the dehumidifier’s moisture-free air. With some preliminary measurements, you can be sure you buy the correct grade dehumidifier and be ensured that it will dry out the amount of space you have in the basement.

Carpet in the basement can be risky as well. Even the driest of basements often have more humidity than the rest of the house and completely carpeting an entire basement can be an invitation to mold and mildew (and ruined carpeting.) If you really want the comfort of carpeting to be a feature in your remodeled basements though it’s easy to achieve with a few well-placed area rugs.
